After claiming victory in a public bidding war with arch rival NetApp earlier this year, EMC rounds out 2009 with deduplication player Data Domain tucked under its belt. The storage giant is aiming for increased integration of its products in the datacentre and also announced plans to invest US$1.5 billion in India over the next five years, including a 24-hectare centre of excellence in Bangalore. That’s three times the previous five-year spend. The
centre will include customer service, and research and development facilities.

Both moves illustrate the company’s plan to deliver more highly integrated, end-to-end services for its customers. Apart from committing this big chunk of change, EMC has increased efforts to move into the systems management arena, acquiring FastScale Technology for its private cloud products and Kazeon for its eDiscovery and compliance software.

Looking ahead to next year, EMC will no doubt remain locked in the ongoing
battle for dominance of the lucrative storage market. Rachael Bolton
