Global HQ: Tauranga, New Zealand

Website: www.pingar.com
Global leader: Peter Wren-Hilton, CEO
Core activity: Next-generation, ‘intelligent’ semantic search
Revenue: Not disclosed
Key customer: Microsoft
Employees: 12

Pingar’s search technology is said to be different from its competitors, in that it understands contextual queries. The company’s tool goes inside data documents, finds the content the user is seeking and then places it into a dynamically-generated PDF or XPS document, rather than just presenting a list of links, as with the traditional search model.

The Tauranga-based company was accepted into the Microsoft Start-up Accelerator Programme in the UK in 2008, which resulted in an enterprise search tool being developed by Pingar that can be embedded into
Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010.

It has offices in the UK and Hong Kong and will open a US office in 2011. Other plans include developing semantic search solutions for different market verticals, such as legal, accounting, HR, pharmaceutical, financial services, education and government.

The company launched a Chinese language search platform this year and plans to develop further multilingual versions. It will also develop APIs so developers can build custom search solutions. Ulrika Hedquist
