In 2010, global drive production exceeded demand and to protect its market share against rivals Western Digital and Hitachi, Seagate is prepared to take a hit on prices, CEO Patrick O’Malley told Reuters in August.

Seagate mainly sells its disk drives to major original equipment manufacturers, distributors and retailers. As well as hardware, it is providing storage services for small- to medium-sized businesses, including online back-up, data protection and recovery solutions.

Seagate claims to have a 60 percent market share in the enterprise space. It plans to leverage this position to launch next-generation, flash-based solid-state drives that are faster than traditional storage, but also more expensive.
