Gen-i to build new Christchurch datacentre

Gen-i is planning to build its third Christchurch datacentre at Christchurch International Airport.

Gen-i has announced it will partner with Christchurch International Airport and Canterbury-based Data Centre Design and Build Limited (DCDB) to deliver a new $10.5 million datacentre in Christchurch.

Gen-i says the agreement will provide it with a datacentre on the Christchurch International Airport campus, through a lease agreement with landowner CIAL. CIAL will also construct the datacentre building to Gen-i specifications.

DCDB will contribute specialist datacentre mechanical and electrical design and fit-out services, and testing and commissioning of the new facility to ensure it meets functional requirements.

Gen-i says its new datacentre will be built to the latest building code and seismic standards on a site at Perimeter Road, chosen for its geological stability relative to the wider Christchurch area.

The 1000 square metre facility is due to open in mid-2013. Gen-i says it will be carrier neutral and have the capacity to house up to 180 racks across two data halls.

According to Gen-i the new datacentre will complement the company’s two existing Christchurch datacentres in Hereford Street and Hillmorton, and will help to meet increased demand from clients looking to relocate their infrastructure.
