CIO Summit 2012: The leadership imperative

The conference, now in its sixth year, is the largest gathering of CIOs and senior IT executives in New Zealand.

Campos will be joined by a powerhouse of keynote speakers including IDC chief analyst Frank Gens, New York Stock Exchange Euronext CIO Steve Rubinow, VMware CTO Paul Strong and Chris Chant, G-Cloud Programme Director, Her Majesty’s Government (UK).

The theme for this year’s conference is ‘The Leadership Imperative: Agility, business growth, collaboration’. It is organised by CIO magazine, IDC and Conferenz.

Campos will talk about CIOs and the social enterprise, as well as how he and his team manage big data, security, resilience and business continuity. He will also discuss which business technology skills are valuable in today’s environment and how Facebook ensures it has the right mix of critical skills.

Gens will share pointers on “competing for 2020 and the ICT decisions CIOs must get right today”. He says the ICT industry is in the midst of a ‘once every 20 to 25 years’ shift to a new technology for growth and innovation. He will provide a compelling strategic view of the next stage of the key global technology trends that will define the future of enterprise and consumer ICT.

Strong will address the world of the CIO: from the changing infrastructure in today’s world, to the ability to build and run new applications that best take advantage of this infrastructure, to the new and emerging end-user world

Rubinow will discuss the rise of the CIO as a business leader. Growth of data, security concerns, meeting consumer demand for technology and service, collaboration and resilience are key issues facing today’s networked enterprises. These issues are magnified for the NYSE

Euronext, where operations are very much dependent on robust, consistent, and agile technology platforms, a combination of on premise and the cloud. Rubinow will share pointers for managing people and technology in a fast paced competitive environment, while continuing to be seen as a business leader and advisor to the executive team and the board.

Chris Chant  will discuss about the changing government ICT landscape, sharing his experiences as head of the G-Cloud strategy which is set to transform the nature of public sector ICT in the UK. He is responsible for setting the strategy for the use of cloud computing and data centre consolidation across the public sector. He was previously Director of London 2012 Integration and Assurance and also CIO within the Government Olympic Executive (GOE). Most of his work has involved working in successful partnership with multiple public sector bodies and the largest IT suppliers in the industry.

The conference will feature New Zealand CIOs who will share key lessons learned from recent projects. These include:

Bruce Tinsley, CIO, Opus International Consultants will share an insider’s view of a business transformation effort. How did things go so wrong? How did they pick up the pieces? What lessons were learnt and then applied to the next effort?

Winston Fong, vice president ICT, Fisher & Paykel Healthcare will share his experiences in the mobile device movement, how he manages the tensions as Fisher & Paykel Healthcare updates technology roadmaps and responds to the demands of the business.

Russell Jones, chief operating officer, ASB will present on balancing business agility with governance. CIOs are increasingly being asked to deliver technology-driven innovation rapidly, in response to requests for enhancements and new services across the business, while providing the right balance of governance. Jones, who was the 2011 CIO of the Year, will talk through some of ASB’s experiences and the critical barriers and key discussions it is working through.

Craig Columbus, CIO of Russell McVeagh, will discuss how the law firm is handling big data and turning it into knowledge to solve real-world problems.

Alma Hong, CIO, New Zealand Fire Service will talk about business continuity. The level of dependence of organisations on IT infrastructure is such that the CIO’s charter must include the need to build resilience into the technology infrastructure so that the move from daily operations to crisis response is seamless. Hong will reflect on New Zealand’s experiences from 2011, discussing the lessons learned, the top strategic priorities and the biggest challenges she sees for CIOs in the future.
