ASB to let customers make payments to Facebook users

By CIO Staff | Wednesday, June 20 2012
In what it says is a first for New Zealand banks, ASB customers will be able to make payments to friends and other acquintances on Facebook, without using bank numbers.

The feature will be available for users of ASB’s smartphone apps for iOS and Android from mid-July, and payments can be made to any New Zealand bank account.

ASB has also announced it will let its customers use the banking app from multiple devices, following customer criticism of the latest app update which saw that feature lost.

“Kiwis are increasingly engaging with friends, family and businesses through social media and on average they have more Facebook friends than the typical Facebook user globally,” says ASB’s GM of brand experience and channels Anna Curzon. (See related article The Facebook Effect).

“We know from talking to our customers that they are seeking out quicker, more convenient, and safer ways to make payments that reflect their lifestyle. The next step in this evolution is being able to seamlessly make payments from their smartphone, using Facebook as a channel.

"We believe Facebook payments will be a popular addition to the range of payment options already available on ASB Mobile which include payments by mobile numbers and email addresses.”
