Otago Polytechnic CIO Mike Collins has five overarching areas of focus for ICT within the education provider this year:
- Student IT capability — To position our graduates at the forefront of IT application in their chosen discipline and work practice;
- Current and emerging technologies — To facilitate teaching and learning, unbounded by time and place;
- Cutting edge IT infrastructure — To enhance the effectiveness of learning and teaching;
- IT accessibility — To enhance the effectiveness and productivity of our staff; and Information systems — To enhance our planning and decision making.
Though budgets are flat and IT staff numbers have decreased, significant ICT projects are planned for 2011. Upgrades to Windows 7 and SharePoint 2010 will be completed this year. Other key projects include ongoing desktop virtualisation; a review of remote services for students and staff; implementation of Adobe Connect; completion of a VMware View implementation initiated last year; further VoIP implementation; improvements in accordance with ISS policy and standards; review and purchase of a new backup and SAN system; a ComVault 9 upgrade; MFD and InfoTrack replacements; upgrades to systems and processes in compliance with ITIL standards delivery and the Public Records Act.
